Sen. Cory Booker slated to campaign with Slotkin this week in Oakland County

U.S. Rep. Elissa Slotkin (D-Holly) is scheduled to campaign Friday in Oakland County with someone she hopes will soon be her colleague.

U.S. Sen. Cory Booker (D-N.J.) will campaign alongside Slotkin to speak with supporters about some of the myriad of issues facing Michiganders and the country including rebuilding the middle-class, reproductive rights and gun violence.

Both Slotkin and Booker have supported the Bipartisan Background Checks Act and the Safe Guns, Safe Kids Act, which was introduced by Slotkin last year and would require safe and proper storage of firearms in households to prevent children and others from illegally accessing the weapon.

In the past three years, Slotkin has had two school shootings in her district: the Oxford High School shooting in 2021 and the Michigan State University shooting in 2023. She has said those incidents have strengthened her resolve to pass gun reforms.

She has also been endorsed by former U.S. Rep. Gabby Giffords (D-Ariz.) who was shot in 2011 and has since become one of the nation’s leading advocates on gun violence prevention. 

Slotkin running for the U.S. Senate seat against former U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers (R-White Lake), who is endorsed by the National Rifle Association.

The seat is open with U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-Lansing) retiring and is considered a must-hold for Democrats if they want to maintain their slim majority. Republicans have been optimistic about picking up the seat.

Recent polls show Slotkin with an approximately 5% lead in the race.
